Wood, Talc and Mr. J
by Chris Rose

A look back. Without the rose-tinted spectacles, but with hindsight and humour, and with poignancy and affection.

1978. The North.

Phillip sees life in a simplistic if passionate way: up or down, us and them, black, white and nothing in-between. When not doing his ‘thing’ in Wigan’s Casino Club – voted ‘The Greatest Disco in the World’ by Time Magazine – Phillip hates the world. Or at least he thinks he does. He longs for the weekend, or a greater, permanent escape from the daily grind of factory life in an industrial town.

With a little imagination, he might realise things midweek aren’t that bad: there’s the loving family, the secure job amid mass unemployment, a relationship with the perfect young woman… Or maybe he realises too late. And all he’d deemed important was only ever an illusion, his reflected image included.

Coming full circle by way of loss and more loss, you would hope lessons are learned…

The book progresses through myriad dream sequences, interwoven song-themes, a father’s philosophical ramblings, ever blackening wit, leitmotif – or seemingly recurring scenes; is someone laughing at our hero? And Phillip’s own, lyrical, strut-like, black or white manner.

Dancehall adventures via train rides to Heaven, scooter cruising almost coast to coast. Beneath the pier encounters with the opposite sex, et al… set against the birth of Scargill and Thatcher feuding…

Before long they realize this serial killer is always one step ahead of the law. The only DNA evidence left at the scene matches the victim—until they finally get a big break. Minute amounts of skin found under the fingernail of a young woman reveal another source, a male. Now with a suspect in their sights, they set a trap; but what happens next will totally blow them away. See if you can follow the leads, but be prepared for a few surprises as you join us in this search for the elusive killer in CSI East Coast Episode III.

Devil's Nightmare: Premonitions
by
Robert Pruneda

DescriptionDevil's Nightmare, Book 2

Sequel to the Amazon bestselling horror Devil's Nightmare, Robert Pruneda brings fans of the first novel another horrific thriller full of twists, chills, and a shocking conclusion. Two years have passed since Aaron Sanders retired from the Austin Police Department after what the media has called The Saint Hedwig Massacre. He moves his family out of the capital city to start a new life as a small town cop in Lost Maples, Texas, where the population count is updated more often than the murder rate. That bit of reputation is about to change when Aaron is once again caught in the middle of a mysterious investigation that has an eerie familiarity. This time, however, he is certain what is responsible for the violent deaths . . . Or is he? Evil knows no boundaries, and it is up to Aaron to figure out how to protect the residents of his community, and his family, from becoming its next victims.

Still On Herring Cove Road: Hickory, Dickory, Death
by
Michael Kroft

DescriptionThe first murder raised eyebrows, the second raised alarms. Ten-year old Dewey Dixon is moving, and he couldn't be more excited; though, he's alone in his enthusiasm. Lisa, his mother, and recently retired Avriel, his next door neighbour and best buddy, don't share his excitement regarding the move from a bungalow in a middle class neighbourhood to a dirty basement level apartment in the lower-class neighbourhood at the edge of Halifax’s city limits where two murders have recently occurred. This sometimes lighthearted and at other times intense novel follows Dewey as he adjusts to his new environment, befriends Blue, a streetwise kid, and Stevie, a tough kid who talks only by whispering, and then crosses paths with a serial killer preying on children.

Here Among the Ruins
by
Regina Puckett

DescriptionA collection of poetry

Drink Our Fill
Ever once awhile and again
I think back to where it begin
A tracing of a fingertip
A momentary trip and slip
Goosebumps and shivers
Moments sliced into slivers
A pause and then a glance
Wondering if there could be a chance
If only time could somehow stand still
While our hearts drank their fill
