The Last Rose Pearl
by Grace Walton

A Low Country Love Story

The year is 1812 and Britain is at war with America.

In London, Dylan St. John is the most handsome rake in the Regency’s tight-knit aristocratic circles. Deemed Heartless St. John, he’s also the American heir of the Duke of MacAllister. Everyone in society knows these two facts. No one knows he also works as a spy for the new American Commissioner of Peace.

He’s the darling of Mayfair and the prime catch of the Marriage Mart. He swears he’ll never be caught in parson’s mouse trap.

In Savannah, Rory Windsor vows never to marry, as well. A Christian, she’s busy running an orphanage for children of mixed heritage. She wears britches, rides astride, and manages her family’s shipping business. No stranger to tragedy, she makes a black mourning bead for each person she loses. She wears them as a necklace. Miss Windsor has far too many black rose pearls.

She’s considered a beautiful bluestocking and a pesky social reformer.

He needs her help to discover who in Savannah is smuggling guns to the Loyalist Creek Indians. And he’ll do anything to bend her to his will. Even use his much vaunted charm.

Rory isn’t interested in making a splash in society. An innocent, she suspects she’s drawn to Dylan St. John in a way that can’t be virtuous. But she agrees to pose as his betrothed to help him save lives. Rory just prays she can guard her heart. And she prays she won’t be forced to make "The Last Rose Pearl".

The Man from Beijing
by
Henning Mankell

DescriptionThe acclaimed author of the Kurt Wallander mysteries, writing at the height of his powers, now gives us an electrifying stand-alone global thriller.

January 2006. In the Swedish hamlet of Hesjövallen, nineteen people have been massacred. The only clue is a red ribbon found at the scene.

Judge Birgitta Roslin has particular reason to be shocked: Her grandparents, the Andréns, are among the victims, and Birgitta soon learns that an Andrén family in Nevada has also been murdered. She then discovers the nineteenth-century diary of an Andrén ancestor—a gang master on the American transcontinental railway—that describes brutal treatment of Chinese slave workers. The police insist that only a lunatic could have committed the Hesjövallen murders, but Birgitta is determined to uncover what she now suspects is a more complicated truth.

The investigation leads to the highest echelons of power in present-day Beijing, and to Zimbabwe and Mozambique. But the narrative also takes us back 150 years into the depths of the slave trade between China and the United States—a history that will ensnare Birgitta as she draws ever closer to solving the Hesjövallen murders.

Pieces of Autumn
by
Mara Black

DescriptionI wish I could tell you that I was stolen.

Kidnapped off the street in some third-world country, sold against my will, while a desperate family back home waited and prayed and talked about me on the news.

I wish I could tell you that, because then you might understand.

What really happened? I walked to my fate with my eyes wide open. But before you say I deserved whatever happened to me, you should know. I was desperate. I was alone. I was afraid for my life. You would have done the same thing.

I thought things couldn’t possibly get any worse.

But then, I woke up in darkness, unable to move. There was only one thing I was sure of: I wasn’t alone anymore.

And then I heard HIS voice…

The Short Book of Short Shorts
by
George Angus

Description

This little collection of stories is in what's known as a “flash fiction” format. Flash fiction is typically a story that can be told in 1,000 words or less. It creates a bit of a challenge for the writer in that with that kind of word limit every word is precious and needs to have impact.

For readers, the advantage in these kinds of stories is that they are bite-sized. This book is easily readable in a single setting and the stories are varied enough to hold your interest. I tend to write in a conversational tone and this will be evident. What is also evident is the use of everyday language, hence you may be subjected to harsh language on occasion. Trust that there is no profanity just for profanity's sake. If you enjoyed these stories, I would appreciate you taking a minute and posting a review.

The Stories

Sickhouse – The ultimate act of revenge on an inanimate object by a man convinced the house is the cause of all his problems.

Questions and Answers – Sometimes, age is not a boundary in friendship.

The Story of Charlie Z – The all-American neighborhood and who may lurk there.

Perfect Weekend – An account of a truly magical weekend.

Fading – Come be a part of a writer's descent into madness.

Xnortherner – A humorous take on living in the great north.

The Writer's Fable – A setting in a distant time with implications in today's world.

The Crazy Lady Who Yells At Her Dogs – A favorite of the author. Every town in America has a person like this.

The Christmas Story – A true story of hope and good cheer during the holiday season.

Night Stocker – An obvious play on words or something different?

The Good Night – A breautiful story of love and redemption in old Scotland.

Even Steven – Based on actual events, a perspective of life and death.

Trouble In The Stacks – Quiet in the Library, please.
